4th Tuesday – Taiwanese History Seminar – 4/27

We are going to have regular meetings every 4th Tuesday at the Taiwanese Center. For the month of April, we’re planning a Taiwanese History Seminar. Dr. Chen, a retired professor of East Asian History at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, will give a talk on Taiwan under the Chinese Nationalist (KMT) rule Here’s an outline of the talk:

  1. Taiwan “restored” to Chiang Kai-shek’s Republic of China
  2. The 228 Incident/Massacre of 1947 and the emerging idea of Taiwan Independence
  3. The 1952 San Francisco Peace Treaty, in which Japan renounced its sovereignty over Taiwan , and subsequent unsettled status of Taiwan
  4. KMT Party-State system and martial law (1959-1987)
  5. US aid and Taiwan ’s economic transformation
  6. Impact of US-China normalization and continuing PRC military threat on Taiwan : Rising demands for democracy vs KMT’s repression
  7. Finally, democratization but political and ideological disputes (independence vs “unification”

Born and grew up in Taiwan

B.A. in Political Science, Tunghai University, Taiwan
M.A. in East Asian Studies, Harvard University
Ph.D. in History, Harvard University

Professor of East Asian History, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, 1969-2001
